I held a focus group consisting of two people where we discussed my future product. The two people gave me very helpful and constructive feedback in what they would expect from my magazine and what they would like from it. I held my focus group face to face as I thought it would be easier to have a conversation this way instead of doing it online e.g. using Skype or Facebook. I was able to identify each person's point of view where I could make them expand on their answers by replying with similar questions in order to gain more information. Below is the discussion I had with my focus group:
Q: If you were to buy a Indie music magazine, what would you expect to find inside of it?
A: Person 1: Interviews with current and vintage indie bands, reviews of new releases and re- releases, tour dates and competitions.
Person 2: The exact same, but as well as posters of artists relevant to the genre.
Q: On the front cover of the magazine, who would you expect to be the main image?
A: Person 2: The current chart toppers.
Q: How would they would be dressed, how would their star image be presented?
A: Person 1: Sterotypically men are usually on indie magazines. They are dressed in dark colours, wearing over-sized and baggy clothes.
Q: What if a woman was featured on the front cover?
A: Person 1: Again they would be wearing very relaxed clothing, not smart - messy hair, dramatic make-up.
Q: What do you think should be included on the front of a indie magazine?
A: Person 1: Standard things like price and date.
Person 2: A large headline advertising a exclusive interview. The persons name should be very big especially if they are really famous as this would draw people in.
Person 1: A competition too.
Q: What should the paper quality of the magazine be like?
A: Person 2: Obviously the better the quality the more expensive the magazine will be.
Person 1: Maybe a glossy front and back but then the inside pages to be relatively thin - maybe using recycled paper like lots of other magazines use.
Q: If you were to design the logo of a indie magazine, what would it be like?
A: Person 1: Maybe using musical instruments or music notes.
Person 2: I would use the Union Jack or just the colours of it.
Q: Where would be a good location to capture photographs for a indie double page spread?
A: Person 2: Camden or at a festival like Reading.
Person 1: Denmark Street because there are lots of retro guitar shops down there, a recording studio or Soho in London.
I found performing this focus group very helpful as it has given me some new ideas to consider. These new idea include where I could do my photo shoot like Denmark Street, how I should dress model, what the paper quality should be like which I had not considered before.
