QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS

After physically handing out my questionnaire to 28 people (aged 14-30) and tallying up the amount of people who voted for each option, I have put my information into pie charts which are presented below...

1. Which of the following names would you prefer to be the name of an Indie music magazine?

As the pie charts represents 'Vinyl' was the most popular name for an indie magazine with 39% of the people I asked voting for it. I am pleased this was the most popular name as I also personally like it and think it ties in with my theme perfectly. However it was close between 'Vinyl' and 'Velocity' which scored 29%. I think these two names were the most popular as they are unique words which hold meanings behind them, They both also directly relate to music which is a key feature needed. After collecting my findings I will be calling my product 'Vinyl'.

2. Which colour scheme do you think would appropriately suit the genre of my magazine?

Almost half of people (43%) voted 'Black, white and electric blue' to be the colour scheme of my magazine. I think this was the most popular because of the added detail about the colour blue - how it will be 'electric'. This automatically catches the persons attention as it also connotes musical instruments and sounds e.g. electric guitar. When creating my product I think this colour scheme will create a good atmosphere as well as it looking professional and sleek.  Some of the feedback I gained from the questionnaire was that some of the options were very masculine based due to the stereotypes of blue and green being associated with men. As I am using a female model, I want to go against stereotypes associated with indie music magazines. When designing my magazine I may alter the colours of my magazine to more neutral colours like silver, to appeal to both sexes

3. Which of the following articles would you expect or would like to read about?

Within my questionnaire I asked what people would like to read about if they were to read an indie magazine. I found this a beneficial question to ask so I know what the public want from my product so that I can meet their expectations. 'New up and coming artists' was voted the most popular with 32% which surprised me. This result surprised me as thought most people would not want to read about this as they would be interested in older or more famous artists. However all the options received a high amount of votes due to the fact that I allowed people to vote for more than one option. This is because people want to read about more than one article and liked several of the options.

4. How much would you be willing to pay for a fortnightly magazine?

After researching into the cost of magazines (NME £2.50) I decided to put the lowest price as £2.50 and the highest as £4.00 as I thought no one would be willing to pay more than this. Because my target audience is young they will not be able to afford an expensive magazine hence the reason I want it to be affordable. However if the magazine is too cheap then it will appear tawdry or of a poor quality lacking professionalism. Therefore the price is  very important and something that needs to be correct as it can reflect a lot about the magazine. The price of of £2.50 and £3.00 were almost equally as popular indifference by 1% therefore I will make the price between these figures.

5. Do you think my magazine should include competitions?

The majority of people (89%) voted that they think I should include a competition in my magazine. However the minority (11%) thought I shouldn't because they saw it as being 'tacky' and not something that should be included in a cool indie magazine. However I will follow the majority vote and include a competition as I think it is an effective way of attracting a customer to open and potentially buy the product. Possible competition ideas include winning an iTunes voucher, free subscription for a month, free concert tickets, a signed copy of a new record or band merchandise.

6. Would you be interested in receiving a free gift with

the magazine such as posters or a discount code?

Everybody (100%) voted that they would like to receive a free gift with the magazine which is what I predicted the result of the question to be. When deciding what the free gift will be I must make sure it is relevant to the genre of magazine and not something completely random that would not appeal to my niche audience. Free posters of popular bands, discount codes off popular clothing brands like Urban Outfitters or discount codes off concert tickets are all gifts that my target audience would want, which I shall consider.

I also received some constructive feedback where people wrote down some of their own ideas. Here, is a questionnaire I received where the person came up with the name of 'Interlude' taken from the indie/alternative band Alt J. They also gave me ideas for a logo if I were to use this name as well as a colour scheme suggestion. I found this very helpful as it gave me a rough idea of what my target audience expect from my product. It also inspired me to look at Indie song names and compare them with my original ideas.

I have learnt from questionnaire research that my target audience want an affordable magazine filled with good quality content about indie bands. Readers also want to get involved with the magazine by entering competitions and receiving free gifts. I also learnt that a lot of girls would be interested in purchasing my magazine therefore it is essential that my product appeals to both genders.
