INITIAL IDEAS

Possible Names:

  1. Slam
  2. Thunder
  3. Snap
  4. Clash
  5. Beat
  6. Volume
  7. Vibrate
  8. Brit
I want the name of my magazine to consist of one word that is very powerful and meaningful. Onomatopoeia's which resemble the source of the sound that it describes such as 'bang' or 'pow' fit this criteria. These words relate to the genre of my magazine of indie music as they replicate the sounds made by the musical instruments. I want to use one word to I can it enlarge it when editing to fill the top of the page. This one word will stand out to the reader as it will give them a little amount to read and give a sense of the contents of the magazine.

Chosen Genre:

  1. Indie Music
I have chosen the music genre of Indie as I am most interested in this genre therefore I will enjoy making the product. Being a indie music fan it will make it easier for me to know what my target audience would want and expect from the product.I also like the style of indie music magazines which is very simplistic and bold. Being a regular reader of such magazines, doing additional research and analyse has strengthened my understanding of the music genre.

House Style:

The house style of my magazine will include a consistent colour scheme and typography. My colour scheme will include a range of block colours such as red and black as well as subtle tones of grey and silver. The typography of the masthead will be bold but stylish attracting a young audience. I will include minimal coverlines to fit in with the basic style therefore the font will still need to be clear to read and consistent.

The Main Publishers:

Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company that manages 600 magazines, over 400 digital products, 50 radio and TV stations across the world. Bauer aquire a collection of media brands including Heat, Grazia, Magic and KISS FM. Most importantly Bauer produces music magazines such as Mojo, Kerrang and Q which all feature indie/rock related content.

Time Inc (formally known as IPC media) is an American New-York based publishing company. The company publishes over 90 magazines some of which are NME, Marie Claire and InStyle.

  Mode of Address:

The mode of address is how the text in a magazine speaks to the audience. The mode of address is very important as it influences how the audience should respond to the text. I will type my text informally to attract a young audience as if I wrote formally then particularly teenagers would be disinterested as they would think the magazine is designed for a different age group. Therefore I shall use slang words that only a young generation understand.

How often will the magazine be published?

My magazine will be published fortnightly. I have decided this because I think weekly magazines can be a bit repetitive and less exciting than an magazine that has bigger time period between each issue. However I think a month is too long as the issue would have missed a lot of news that happened throughout the month consequently making the product dated as they include old news.

Price and Paper:

The quality of the paper plays a big role in how much the product will cost. Because my target audience is young people aged between 14-30 the magazine must be cheap as they will not be able to afford it. However because I want my magazine to look professional, include world-class artists, good content and use glossy paper the product will cost on average somewhere between £2-£4.

Star Image

My star image will be a young female model dressed appropriately according to my genre of Indie music. Because the model will wear monochrome clothing I need to include pops of colour to stop the image looking dull e.g. red lipstick or green sunglasses. She will be interacting with the guitar so she looks like a real music artist.
